Boston Man Charged With Hate Crime After Attacking Gay Man With Shovel, Box Cutter

A 25-year-old man was struck with a snow shovel and attacked with a box cutter by a suspect who the victim said called him several anti-gay slurs, a Boston police report said.

The suspected hate crime assault happened just before noon Wednesday at the corner of Tremont Street and Prentiss Street.

When Boston police arrived at the scene, officers found the victim suffering from an apparent head wound that was bleeding heavily.

Police said the attacker the victim in the head with a snow shovel then pulled out a box cutter and slashed the victim over his eye.

The suspect, later identified as Eddie Smith, 58, of Boston, fled on foot but was apprehended in the area of Shawmut Avenue and Dudley Square.

Police officers said they also found a box cutter as well as a snow shovel.

According to the police report, the victim had just left Prentiss Street when Smith began insulting him using several anti-gay slurs.

The victim told police he had previous encounters with Smith before where Smith insulted his sexual orientation.

He was taken to a Boston-area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Smith was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, civil rights violation (hate crime) and mayhem. He was expected to be arraigned in Roxbury District Court.
